I tried cayenne after my marigolds were getting eaten to the nubs. It
seemed to work until the recent rains washed it away and I didn't re-apply.
And, it's definitely the pill bugs and not snails as I suspected. Kinda goes
against the common wisdom in the rec.gardens thread about marigolds, as
well.
I have two left and I dosed them just now, so I'll see how it goes. The
crowd on a spent blossom split up pretty fast.


Thanks, but my poor Lobelia cardinalis is gone. I replaced it with
Phormium aka New Zealand Flax. I am planning on bringing this plant
into the area next season in about 15 varieties. I found a source
with rooted cuttings and the price is right. I don't understand why
the garden centers don't have this plant. It is very suitable to our
soils, heat, and low summer water.

My new pond is up and running also. I waited for all the catkins to
fall from the huge live oaks which almost killed my pool filtration
system this year!

Maybe I'll buy another L. cardinalis and try tobasco sauce! The new
pond is all planted up for the hummingbirds who come in swarms to our
feeders and they love L. cardinalis.
