But some of the online stores are saying an 8 inch by
8 inch round pot is two gallons and with that formla i
get something around 1.75 gallons. So im figuring i
must have the formula wrong....


That's close enough for horticultural folks.

"One gallon" pots (and up) vary considerably in size from make to
maker.

They round off liberally. ;-)
