Default locating underground stream

A neighbour recently told me that she could hear an underground stream
flowing beneath her garden, . . . .

Snip

If it can be heard it's either in a cave or a culvert. Either way, forget
it!

Not necessarily. I once lived in a house with a garden which
comprised about 6" of top soil over compacted rocky sub-soil.
When it rained, you could hear the water running through the garden 6"
down, in one side and out the other.
