Hi I put beans in early in February.
They have grown well (and sturdily) as some have chosen to grow across
the ground for a few inches and then upwards (now 10 inches high) , I
thought they were fine especially when the flowers turned to beans!
Tonight I examined one bean pod - and the whole thing came away from
the ground with very little root! There are ants around as well - are
these the problem?

Broad beans in Feb, yes, runner beans no. I assume you mean the
former. It is probably the wet and windy weather, if you have had
what most of us have had for the last 10 days.
I would sow another lot, whichever they are. It is not usual to sow
runner beans till now anyway, and you should be able to get a crop of
broad beans too.
Good luck anyway.
