Default [IBC] Identifying Trees in the wild-different approach

Arborists are required to identify trees based on; twigs, buds, bark,
form and any other special characteristics, not by foliage.
By looking at the twigs (stems) and buds you may be able to make some
discoveries on your own without prejudging the tree based on
nomenclature. I try a different approach when going out into the wild to
collect.

Look at the buds; are they large, small? The shape of the bud, round,
conical etc., distance between each bud, color of the twig, bud
placement on the twig, whorled, opposite, alternate, bud density - the
amount of buds per cm or inch. Angle of the buds on the twig, number of
scales, previous years growth compared to last years environmental
conditions. What are the current soil conditions, companion plants,
examine if possible surface roots plus many other things to think about
rather than worrying about a name.
