I have a gr8 rose bush in a large pot. Is there a safe way to devide

Easiest way to propagate a rose, imho, is called "layering" or "stooling".
This will give you a rose on its own roots, which may or may not be better

Remember that patented plants aren't supposed to be propagated at home.
