Default Brown patches on conifer hedge ?

I have a conifer hedge about 70 yds long
between myself and the people next door.

It is probably 15-20 years old .........a lovely hedge...well looked after
8 ft tall 5 ft wide
and NOT a fast growing variety of conifer.

In fact it only puts on about 4-6 ins a year and has been kept very tight
and well cut.

I have only been in this house a short while and Im just about ready to give
it its annual trim on my side............and have noticed that there is a
patch of brown (dead )
foliage on top of the hedge about a yeard square.
At the sides of the hedge some tips of the foliage are brown and this seems
to be on a length of hedge about
12 feet long.
The hedge is predominantly still 95% green apart from the top which you cant
see from the ground .......and it seems having spoken to the chap next door
its happening both sides.

Clearly we would love to "nip this in the bud" has anyone got any ideas what
may be causing this
and any ideas on a possible treatment.
The thought of loosing a hedge this mature is daunting.

Many thanks

Barry
