I guess what I meant was...the ramp is intended to encourage other life like
frogs, small birds, lizards, whatever...is it a bad idea to have it all?

The wild life I've seen around my pond has no problems dealing with a
rock edge (2" patio stone overhang), or a vertical edge.
Yes birds will prefer a shallow area to bathe in. Depending on the
species, what height above ground.
The fish would like to be able to get away from a predator.
