Either simply push the switch assembly backwards by hand until until you see a "P" (then press start), get a new switch, or just short the wires (but this deactivates a safety feature). I once had a problem with a static engine, it would stop after a while and assuming it was out of fuel one would take the cap off and check or just slosh some more petrol into it, after which it would start again. It turned out to be a blocked petrol tank breather hole.
