why did it build dams in the first place?

On our rivers they were built for generation of
electricity (a lot of which we send to California).
They are being threatened with being torn down
for fish migration. Salmon.
Mine DH works for a nuclear power plant...
(easier on the fish except for that glow in the
dark thing - does make them easier to find
in the back of the fridge).
