A major new scientific report has produced 'convincing' evidence that
eating red meat increases the risk of bowel cancer. But instead of

Prior to the advent of pesticides, tobacco-smoking was the only
protection against many insect-born diseases, notably Malaria from
mosquitoes. A dilute nicotine wash is still the most effective means
to control insects on plants.

Prior to the advent of sedentary behaviors (-epidemic chronic
obesity), GI tract cancer or any other kind was never a measurable
problem. It was never even recognized as a disease until recently
because it just doesn't happen in people who have a physically
demanding lifestyle. The clearest demonstrations are people with
advanced BRAIN cancer who relapsed after every treatment available
through local hospitals (chemo, etc), but then go on to complete
remission after changing their lifestyle.
One such example: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21637695/
Ditto numerous other examples of persons with the big C, and other
diseases, having complete remission after changing to a physically
demanding lifestyle. See also "gout"

A large proportion of our "diseases" are actually self-imposed by
lifestyle. Although the converse can also be true from over-exertion,
eg. deformed bones. And of course inadequate nutrition carries a price
too. Including an insufficiency of red meat protein in one's diet.
