The cheapest way to improve heavy clay soil is to add gypsum to it at
the rate of 1 kilo per 1 square metre. If you live in an area where
you're still having good rains at the moment, you don't even have to
dig the gypsum into the ground. You can just lay it on top and let the
rain do the work. If not, you'll need to dig it in. Adding compost or
animal manure along with the gypsum will help even more. Gypsum is pH
neutral so it won't hurt any plant. If the soil is really heavy you
might have to repeat this 1-2 times over the next 12 months.
