Morning all,

I have a small (approx 4ft tall) Japanese Maple growing in between a
conifer and a cotoneaster. Please see following pics:

The conifer is going to get taken out when we have the extension done
and I'm worried the extension could also damage the maple. I'm keen to
place it in a large pot and keeping it there.

Is this possible and what time of year should I ideally pot the maple?

Many thanks in advance

Hi Nick,

You can pot the maple as soon as it is dormant. I should point out that
it will be happier in the ground though. You can wait 'til late winter if
you want, also.

You will probably need to root prune a little, and make sure your soil is
_really_ well drained. Do not fertilize beyond a little osmocote. Don't
water in the winter, when it leafs out keep the soil moist (but not wet).

Try and choose a pot only slightly larger than the root ball. The reason
is that too large a pot tends to be wetter, to the plant's detriment.

You could just move it, I do that all the time with Japanese Maples, trying
to get the light right.

Good luck,

-E
