Many antique roses suit this purpose well. Here is a link to a
particularly thorny rose which doesn' thave a lot of problems if
provided with cool roots and mulch preventing splashing soil up on
the undersides of the foliage:

I have this rose and occasionally my husband comes in cursing it! He
