Your idea sounds right.

I was having trouble with soggy soil and root problems until I drilled
the drain hole...holes now!

I'm on my third year with several of them, and I've left them out over
winter. Guess I should put them up. ;-)

One thing I was taught to aid in drainage and prevent the holes from
getting plugged was to place some pot sherds over the holes inside prior
to filling. You can also place large, coarse gravel in the bottom of
pots.

Packing peanuts work too. :-)
