Default Will a tree become 'protected' if/when it grows large?

Yes. And the owner of the property has a chance to object.

If the tree is in a "Conservation Area"

- You are not allowed to cut down ANY tree willy nilly
- You must serve notice on the local authority that you want to cut the tree down
- The local authority then have 6 weeks to put a TPO on the tree if they want to

There are a number of complexities. I suggest you Google around.
