Shade-loving shrubs:

Butcher's Broom
Sarcococca confusa - wonderful winter scent.
Rhododendrons and azaleas [acid soil needed]
Euonymous "Emerald 'n' gold"

Ferns are worth considering.

I use the RHS Plantfinder to track suppliers : http://www.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantfinder/searchdetails.asp

As to roses for tubs, I find that the Scotch burnet rose does fine and needs little attention: Rosa spinossisima [it comes in pink, cream and white]. {David Austin Roses will supply]
