The second plant is definitely a Mahonia. My initial guess would be Mahonia
bealeai, commonly known as Leatherleaf Mahonia but there are dozens of
other varieties. Not an unattractive plant but it can spread pretty
aggressively and form large impassable spiny thickets when birds seed them
everywhere.
