Or spring, depending on where you are. I like spring planting in Maine
because of the cold. Also like bare root saplings.

Our church planted a Japanese Red Maple this summer and the Japanese
beetles did a job on it, so another reason to wait for fall or spring.
You really want root growth before you want leaves. So prune fairly
heavily with spring planting.
