Settled on a Geranium on our veranda this morning and is still there 12
hours later :-)

Four inch wingspan and three inch overall body length.

Anyone know anything about them? How long will it stay? How long do they
live?

That looks like a Southern Hawker.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Hawker
and they can live up to 4 months although they spend 3 years as aquatic
larvae.

Won't argue 'cos I know nothing about them, but the nearest we could find
was the Golden - Ringed Dragonfly. Could it be?

It could be but that Dragonfly is jet black with yellow bands and the two
lines on the thorax are angled.
I'm certain yours is a male Southern Hawker.
