Sacha, you've got that the wrong way round. Nitrogen at monthly
intervals for spring/summer growth, followed by a dose of potash in
July to encourage bud set for the following year's flowers.

thanks everyone for your help, i think i will have a go at washing the soot off and give it some more tenderloving care , and see what next year brings.
