I just read what he said again and you are right ("coiled in circular
fashion"); they must be millipedes.

OK I just guessed they were centipedes as when I counted legs there were
approx 100 grin. Yes they are damaging tubers as they are quite eaten
away (honeycombed)
After a Google it appears that there is no way of controlling them.
