Default Making my own bottomless pots

I have a need for some bottomless clay (not plastic) pots to plant up in a
particular location where they won't actually be seen - so they don't have to
be "pretty". Clay chimney pots or flue liners would be ideal but they are
very expensive, so I'm toying with the idea of making my own. I've seen
various sites giving instructions, including this one:

Obviously if I used this method I would leave out the bottom! Has anyone
else tried this sort of thing and if so what sort of success did you have,
and how easy was it?
