Had the misfortune of popping into Dobbie's the other day to buy some
fertiliser, and having read that bonemeal is good to mix in with the
soil I hunted it down. Is £13 for a bucket of stuff the standard price
or was I right to avoid buying it?

* *Dobbies are ridiculously overpriced (for everything). You'll get it
cheaper in Homebase ; or B and Q.

Any thoughts on where to buy something good? Is horse/cow dung any
good?

* *Yes, though in a slightly different way. Bonemeal is a slow-release
fertiliser.
* *Manure is a quicker fertiliser which also improves the texture of the
soil (which is just as important ) . For some plants its too rich to
apply close by
their roots and stems so best used to improve (empty) *soil, or in the
compost heap.

If you have foxes visiting your garden then DONT use Hoof and Horn,
Bone meal or Blood, Fish and Bone as the foxes will dig everywhere you
use it looking for the food.
