Default growing medium for winter containers

It seems to me that my pots and troughs were a disaster last winter,
mainly because the compost/sand mix got too cold and wet. Is it better
to incorporate perlite? I'm reluctant because of the way it seems to
find its way to the surface and blow about all over the place. Are
there perhaps other things I could use to incoporate more air into the
mix? Any thoughts appreciated
