More seriously, they are very prone to fungal infections of their
roots when grown in rich, damp conditions. Under such circumstances,
they are short-lived plants. Beyond that, digging them out below
soil level.

But I don't want to kill them off! Sitting in a garden chair beside my
buddleias this summer, seeing them covered in red admirals, peacocks,
painted ladies was one of life's richest moments.


I like them, too.
