Probably different origins then. We had some very hard winters in the
higher ground above the Thames Valley.

Had I but world enough and time, I would like to try breeding bay
to enhance various characteristics. Bean says that bay has greenish
yellow flowers, but mine are a bright gold - if they were bigger and
longer-lasting, they would be worth growing for decoration. And, as
you say, bay almost certainly varies in hardiness.

Indeed, I can remember the sea freezing at least as far round the coast
as Shoeburyness.

Nah. That's merely the scum congealing :-)
