Worth making contact with growers like David Austin Roses and asking your
question of them.

I emailed David Austin Roses and have already had a reply!
"The following climbing and rambling roses are completely thornless or
nearly so:
Amadis
Bleu Magenta
Mme Sancy de Parabere
Rose-Marie Viaud
Snow Goose
Veilchenblau
Violette
Please let us know if you have any further questions. One of our rose
experts will be more than happy to help."

You can see pics of their thornless roses on the DA website

Janet, thanks for that page. I looked for something like that on the
site before I emailed them, but missed it. I'm torn between Kathleen
Harrop, James Galway and Mortimer Sackler. It depends on the
fragrance. I should have said, I want a climber, not a rambler and
nothing too vigorous. The only one on that page than mentions
fragrance is Zephirine Drouhin, which I have, I think. I'd cut it
hard back but I think I can see new growth.
