Default pruning rhodos

Someone i know had four large Rhododendrons in her front garden, and i

Anyway, she got a gardener to prune them back about 2 years ago,
unfortunately he only pruned them down to about 5 foot and of course
they have sprouted about 4 shoots ate every cut! They are now about 8
- 10 foot tall and about to flower so i suggested she pruned them
after flowering.
However I am not sure how best this should be tackled. Do you take
them down to about four foot and thin the shoots to one at each joint
or cut them down even harder than before but keep on top of them by
rubbing out unwanted shoots.?

Are they the dreaded ponticum rootstock? :-)
