I was admiring my neighbours hawthorn today, thinking how lovely the dark
pink flowers are when I noticed something strange. Two of the branches have
white flowers! I 've never noticed this before. Any ideas on what's going
on?

Plants do that. Mutation in vegetative reproduction is quite common
and, as far as I know, nobody knows why. Quite a lot of garden
varieties have arisen from such sports.

In this case it's also possible that it's grafted on wild-type
rootstock, and the white-flowered branches represent bits of the
rootstock that have grown out.

Nick Maclaren.
