Default underplanting climbing roses

In article ,
says...
I have a long narrow bed with 4 climbers growing up a trellis behind.
Usually I plant some Summer bedding plant beneath, but thought I would
like to have some perennials instead. My first thought was lavender, but
not sure they would work as they prefer dry poor soil, while roses are
the opposite in their requirement. Any ideas please?

Geranium maculatum or Geranium sylvaticum Album
