sounds like berberis Darwinii. Orange flowers in spring.
Should be obtainable from any GC

Not prickly at all, leaves are REALLY tiny and alternate in much the same
manner as Cotonoeaster. Had to trim a border / hedge stuffed with it today.
Was waist high & dense. Pale, woody stems...
