can never find the mag. you want when you need the info.

Definitely. A book is always better, from every point if view. Note
that the ad says "most back issues", so it isn't even complete: a
white elephant.

I don't agree. The seller is offering 168 issues, no bids yet, so if
the price is right it could be a bargain; and an inspirational asset to
a beginner.
In its early years especially, this was a very good and informative
gardening mag with beautiful illustrations.
IIRC a couple of urg's more famous and fabulous old contributors, wrote
for it. (Remember Tim, anyone?)

Finding an article you want is no problem as GI have a free online
index at

It offers a LOT of interesting but easily assimilated information
about gardening history, different styles, different areas of the UK,
local gardens etc; and a wealth of stimulating ideas for making and
planting gardens.
Infinitely more interesting and inspiring than the Expert series, imo.

The OP can take a peek here, and use a mouse to leaf through the pages
of the current issue to
see if the style is of interest

Well, different strokes for different blokes. But ONE HUNDRED AND
SIXTY-EIGHT unbound issues of a magazine? (Say, about four feet of
pile or shelf? How much for postage?) And, if I understand correctly,
you have to go online to look in the index? And there are some
missing? I agree there are good articles and lovely pictures there,
but I still vote for a book or two.
