Maybe, since these birds took off way down south to fly north, the
earth has rotated a bit so when they arrived at their destination it
wasn't there any more and so they turned right to find it?

A lot of birds fly east west on migration as well as north south. Birds
that breed in Siberia will often winter in relatively ice free Western
Europe.

Also birds can make daily flights in any direction from roosts to feeding
areas.
