Terrorist in nature you describe as your gardening friends would seem to be very common. I deeply understand how it could have been to some, anyone can love the flowers but hate nature. I have concluded that most of the gardeners out of a fear of the natural world and the need to tame it so thoroughly, it is no longer scary.
