It grows in the south of France, from a seed brought back from California.

This group is fairly inactive - you could try asking on rec.gardens.

I finally realised what it reminded me of - Lagunaria patersonia.
However it's nowhere near that; it was just the reflexed petals that
were niggling at my memory.
