A tiller chops up way too many earthworms which I like in my beds.
Deep tilling produces a fluffy loam that encourages earthworm
reproduction to a far greater extent than the relatively few that get
destroyed during the process, and spading cuts up just as many. The
vast majority of earthworms reside much more deeply than can be
tilled.
