How many canes should be allowed to grow in the first year from one
plant? I've noticed some of my plants have produced 2 - 3 fairly spindly

plants producing just the one cane have a nice pencil thickness.

Two or three would be fine for the first year, then
no more than four or five from each 'stool' , cutting out the very
spindly ones in later years.

At the moment most will look a bit thin but 'fatten' up later.
