Hi

When do people start planting spring bulbs? I'm thinking especially of
borders where there is still summer bedding in flower - is there a time
in Sept or Oct where you just dig up the old bedding to get bulbs in?

In past years I've left it till the first frost does for the bedding,
then planted bulbs afterwards. This often seems to give poor results,
with the bulbs rotting or not producing many flowers or flowering very
late. Is extra time in the ground in Sept good for a bulb?

Thanks for any opinions

You don't say what sort of bulbs you are planting

Plant spring-flowering bulbs, such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths,
preferably by the end of September
Plant tulips in November
Plant hardy summer-flowering bulbs, such as lilies, alliums and
crocosmia, in September and October

I always found incredibly annoying that all the spring bulbs are on
display in garden center from August and by the time it's the right
season, shelves are empty. I have a hard time keeping the bulbs in the
meantime: they either dry out if kept in my flat or rot if kept outside
in a garden shed. I think I' found a way last year, keeping them outside
in boxes filled with perlite...
