It's also excellent for knowing the meaning of obscure words if people
are trying to confound you with long words! Once you know the meaning of
the root of a word it's often easy to extrapolate the meaning of the
actual word.


Latin students may appreciate this incident, in Bayeuux Cathedral a
few years ago. We encountered a party of British school children with
a master. "Look Sir it says Hic Jacet on this tombstone and it says
the same on one over here". Master's reply, "Perhaps they were from
the same family"! Now he had not learned Latin!
