Are they sold as 'ornamental' trees, or is the fruit supposed to be safe
to eat?

I know someone who does pesticide residue testing who was asked to test
a bay tree for a major UK retailer. The residues were such that it would
be years before it would be safe* to use the leaves in cooking.
