THAI PRESS REPORTS - GMO LABELLING TO BEGIN MAY 11

The Thailand Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is, according to Dr
Sathaporn Wongcharoen, the FDA's deputy secretary-general, to enforce
the labelling of 22 products containing genetically modified organisms
(GMO) from May 11, with fines of Bt30,000 for companies violating the
new rules. The story says that provisions for the labelling system are
made in a 2002 Public Health Ministry announcement, which stipulates
that 22 listed products made from GM sweetcorn or soy beans must be
labelled as such if the GM products in question are among the top
three ingredients, and if the GM content is more than 5 percent. The
ministerial announcement also bans the use of labelling suggesting
that a product is GM-free.
