Default Weed of the Week: Stinging nettle

Stinging nettles are nutritious, useful and the food plant of many
colourful butterflies - there obviously ought to be lots of them, though
not where I'm going to be.
In rich enough soil, one nettle soon spreads by a network of distinctive
yellow roots to cover a large area with a forest of tall slender stems,
stifling other plants and closing paths by falling across them.
If you find one the hard way, get your gloves and pull it out - they
make excellent compost and being stung is said to prevent arthritis.
