What exactly does the veggie filter do, and will it help keep the water

it does several ;things the plants provide a medium to get rid of
nitrate and also some of the benifical bacterisa grow on them to help
with amonia and nitrite for chemical control
the plants roots trap a lot of the fine solids that are in the water
letting it settle in the filter instead of floating around in the pond
the plants provide some oxygen to the water
all in all it does quite a bit to clear the water it should be at least
10 percent of the surface area of your pond IE 10x10 pond = 100 sf so
vegie filter should be 2x5 or 10 sf bigger is always better
hope this helps
