I have subscribe to "rec.food.cooking", as I think several people who

Just to add to the various apocryphal tales.

When we were visiting the US on business in the '80s we were (with a very
straight face) advised that smokers should not tell their US counterparts
that they would "like to bum a fag" as it did not directly translate.

Also better not to offer to "knock you up in the morning" to a female colleague or friend!

They don't believe that city councils used to employ
"knocker-ups". Back in the 50s my parents had to show
them the newspaper cutting lamenting that the last
Durham(?) knocker-up had retired.

But then neither do they understand why someone called
Randolph Haagens raised smiles over here when he
introduced himself saying "Hi, I'm Randy"
