Either way, to me it begs the question: do you actually need to mow it all? Are you using it for golf, or as a bowling green? If not, then mow enough that you will use, then let the rest grow wildflowers. Scythe or strim it once a year, and get a mower suited to the extents of the part you do want to keep short.
