Sure, I'd even let in Trolls (yooper slang for those that live below the
Mackinac bridge)

I'm the yooper. I agree it is a great place. I wouldn't want to live anywhere
else. Although this winter I thought someplace warmer might be nice to try out
for a while. We hit 40 below twice and 20 below lots of times. Lake Superior is
froze over for the first time in twenty years and frost is six feet down this
year.

At least the blackflys have a harder time of it now. I've got family
down in Shawano and worked in Vilas County back in the early 70s. Used
to ski up in the UP.

Have you been on the Menominee reservation? Shawano is fairly close, if I
recall correctly. I worked for the state of Wisconsin for a couple years in
the late seventies (FIA field crew) and one of the high points was putting in
plots for a couple weeks on the magnificent, well-managed White Pine stands
there.

I haven't worked there but passed though lots of times. My sister got
married in Keshena. The Menomini's forest is one of the best examples of
sustainable community forestry I know of. They grow what they need, mill
it themselves and keep the added value. Along with the casino, they're
doing better than most Tribes. Out west many Indian communities would
love to be in the same boat - they've got the land and some have the
mills - but only a few escaped sweetheart deals with major logging
companies and the BIA. The Makah and Quinalt come to mind since they're
nearby. Those rez were badly high graded but slowly regenerating.
