I am putting in my lovely veggie bed this weekend. What are the pros and
cons of using hay, pea straw and sugar cane mulches? I'm interested in
personal experience.

my favourite so far has been pea straw. i didn't like sugar cane very much
(pointy & dusty) & atm i've got straw (wheat?) from the farm shop, i don't
like it much because it's so big & stiff. i like the way pea straw is finer
& more flexible. in future i'm just going to make sure the straw has been
through the chicken yard first to break it up a bit & get the seeds out etc.

i bought lucerne seed to grow mulch etc & see how that goes (but have i
planted it yet? no...)

Not true....my parents used to have goats, and we always named the
'meat'
goats....BarbQ, Matty (they still have the rug) etc.....worked well.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of names like 'Polly' or
'Clarabelle' etc but names like Sirloin or those you mentioned do work
OK. Mind you, I also think it helps to grow up in an environment
where it's well known that the cute babies all grow up to end up on a
plate.




Uh huh....there was clear distintion between 'eating' goats and 'miling'
goats; we made pets out of the milkers, I think it also helped that the meat
goats were usually males, so tended to be a bit smellier and more obnoxious,
and not so 'pretty' either.
