I am afraid that nuclear power may be safe, but when its on a fault line
or mismanagement, then the system is really dangerous, and not just locally.
Have a look at the problems they have with one of the first nuclear
facilities at Sellafield in Great Britain, fifty years after the problem
its still not known how they can fix it.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/england/cumbria/4559771.stm
Despite nuclear being safer these days, its a worry.
Australia is probably in a better position than most countries in the
world to use it, but despite its vastness, there are many people
suffering illnesses caused by unexplained cancers.
I know what I suspect.
Here is the link, and others from the BBC are interesting reading....

I know one thing, In Tasmania our headmaster gave us iodine tablets for
"goitre" which was also an ideal cover for the radioactive fallout which
drifted over Tasmania after a nuclear test in SA.
He may have known that this would prevent problems due to radioactive
iodine being taken up by young people who were still developing.
We were lucky.

Its a good idea. I'm all for nuclear power. Safe as houses.
Martin Fergerson is for nuclear power and he's from the ALP.
At least Rudd will allow Nuclear mining at long last. Now to get the
other states on board so they can mine urainium as well.

There are 443 uranium nuclear power stations in the world. The French
get 75% of power from nuclear reactors and sell power to Germany who
is against Nuclear power but is quite happy to pay for the power that
comes from nuclear.

I don't know why people are against it, maybe it comes from the silly
arms race between the then USSR and the US.

Longer term though helium-3 will be the way to go. 6 tonnes helium-3
would give enough fuel to run the whole of the UK for a year.

Helium-3 is on the moon which is why they are all eager to get back to
the moon.

Helium-3 is a non-radioactive isotope of helium that can be used in
nuclear fusion.

While this is not a gardening topic, it still affects all of us, if

I figure Bass Strait is also in consideration. Especially seeing they
built a power line from Tassie lately...

Pot kettle black. When are you going to understand that the federal

I suspect this person is an old codger who has never voted anything but
Liberal in its life and doesn't want to think about anything political. I

Member of the ALP for 30 years. Even been in parliament for the ALP 30
years ago.

You've proved a point I frequently make. Whenever anyone asks me about the
politicians I've met, I tell them that they are a real cross section of the
community. Some are brilliant and honest and some are as thick as bricks
and I wouldn't trust them to feed my cat.

Came to my senses like that other ALP candidate who is
supporting the LIBS and has seen the hate like some of you have
posted.

The only person here to post in "hate" has been you. You hate druggies, you
told Otter she was dreaming when a check of voting patterns would show that
she made a valid point, you called TeryC a fool with a huge credit card debt
and you accused me of ranting because responding based on facts was beyond
you.

But keep inventing and repeating the myths, it's something that the Federal
Liberals has found works well but unlike the Libs we can just go back one
post and check what you wrote and what others wrote.

Now go play in aus.politics where you belong.

Go stick you head up a dead bear's bum. I'll post where I like and when I
like and an old, hate filled codger who can't respond to a discussion based
on facts earns no respect from me.

The states are racking in the money from the GST.

5) Lol, you really haven't tried to educate yourself have you. If you
had,
you might know what the states gave up in return for getting the GST
income.

But unfortunaltey they haven't given up many of the taxes that they were
supposed to in order to get the GST money.

That is the state ALP that was suppose to remove stamp duty. Blame
them.

Clearly you failed to notice that I made a comment that it WAS the States
that were supposed to remove many taxes and Stamp Duty is not the ONLY tax
they have failed to remove.

There was a big argument about this in ALP ranks a few years ago
but was shouted down by my own members. I'll go public if I continue
to see the crap that is going on.

Please do go public. You'll interview really well on "A Current Affair" in
with the other dopy items like lift up bras and sad renters.

Rudd has clearly gone too far amd
worse than Keating.

Rudd has not yet had a chance to do anything except sit on the Opposition
benches so he can hardly be compared with Keating who made it to be PM. And
since we are talking about going too far, how can he be classed as doing
that? We don't yet know if he has lied but we know already that John Howard
has lied on many occasion with things like children overboard and the GST
that we would 'never, ever' have.

Have some sense. If you want to be treated seriously put some thought into
what you say rather than just reacting on the basis of prejudice.

Opposition leaders across Australia wether they are libs or alp are
quite ordinary to say the least.

Yep.

It may or may not be a good idea, but the point that I was making is that IF

have made any announcement about nuclear. He should have left that to the

Ill informed but not surprising.

You will have noticed that regardless of party, regardless of whether they
are bright or dim and regardless of whether we like 'em or hate 'em, they
are all trying to hold a line. It's a doctrinaire, socially conservative

The Liberals (and they are far from being liberal (sic) in any way or form
at this point in time) do have a problem with the facts but then I think
that voters are partly to blame for that. The fact that voters have let
them get away with the lies for so many terms and in some cases (such as the
'queue jumping' refugees) has just encouraged then to keep up feeding us
bulldust.

Lol, you've already missed the first opportunity under Howard/Costello.

Lol. I bought mine in 1992... cheap thanks to Keating. And sold them two
years back. Should I send a donation to the Labor Party then?

It obvious that any "water initiative" is set up to benefit those who
have brought the utilities. Even the proposed pipeline from Goulburn is
to allow water "swapping" to the highest bidder.
I dont give a stuff who gets in, but I want them to look after the whole
community, and not only those who reckon they're born to rule.
If were doing so well why isn't is apparent with all of us and why are
the employment figures fudged?

I've allready learnt to ignore the "bolt on" Liberal party commentator.
His views are more radical than the anti communist libs that roamed free
all over Australia at one time. They were wiped out when the people
didn't want to take any more crap. We were shown a better way, despite
it becoming increasingly obvious that it wasn't the whole solution when
Fraser stepped in.

Typical opinion piece by Andrew Bolt. Unfortunately, the stupid right wing
hack doesn't seem to know about "environmental flows" and that these were an
ititiative put in place by his beloved Federal Liberal Government. But
given that his readers are similarly uninformed they won't care so long as
he has a crack at a Labor Premier - who cares about the facts. The punters
who read him obviously don't.

In a perverse way, I'm actually looking forward to Labor getting into power.
We'll probably get an interest rate hike to 18% in no time. Then I can buy
investment properties cheaply like I did when Keating was in charge. LOL,
I'm voting Labor. I hope you do too.

You seem to forget, Im a swinging voter.
As far as those far fetched interest rates go, that happened when the
banks were allowed to set their won interest rates and they showed their
general disgust with the general public. overseas banks soon brought in
competitors and the banks soon came to their senses. You cant rip the
heart out of a country and expect them to live.
You have to bleed people slowly. In other words, for those who think
slow like you, dont kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

When it comes to environmental flows, it doesn't benefit those who've bought
the utilities, it benefits the rivers. The rivers will die totally and
irretrievably unless they have those environmental flows

Supposedly the way the stats now work is so that they comply with
international standards. That's all well and good and I wouldn't mind at
all if we weren't fed the line of "lowest unemployment figures in 32 years".
They're comparing apples with oranges and the sodding media never seem to be
able to figure out that the counting method has changed.

Well I hope you took advantage of the time when Howard was Treasurer. He
still has the distinction of being the Treasurer to have the highest
interest rate at +20%. IIRC, the interest rate got to 21.9%.

Youve got to admit he got a better treasures in since, but he is a bit
callous and cynical. And he ought to work on that smile..He looks like a

I bet you didn't have the money to buy any investment properties.

Don't forget Howard has the pathetic distinction of allowing the
highest interest rates that Australians have ever suffered.

Besides that, Howard is the biggest liar that Australia has ever
known - Port Arthur, GST, Children Overboard, Iraq and WMD and
don't forget the $200,000,000 to pull his pathetic brother out
of the shit and the "FREE" Trade agreement with the USA.
Oh, did I mention WorkChoices? LOL... Slavery.
The way he licks Yankee arse is soooooo.... pathetic.

Roll on the election and Bye-Bye Johnny.

I hear he has finally got some guts and may announce it on Sunday?

The sooner the better, good riddance and **** off!

Paul
