Grey laundry water for garden watering?

yeah yeah yeah.....similar to the old put a carp on a cedar plank and
bake for thirty minutes then toss the carp and eat the plank. ;-)

Seriously, if you ever had a proper carp, you would sing a different
song. :-)

Betcha never ate gar either. Easy and better'n you would think.

Care
Charlie

Hehehehe.... seriously, though, I'll eat almost anything, and if I could
find someone to fix me a nice carp, I'd eat it right down. Gar too. :-)

You can buy low quality for like $10-$15 but they will decay from UV

Plus, deep watering is better for shrubs than a sprinkling anyway.

All my piped wastewater goes to the leech field via the septic tank. Due
to
the low permeability of my local soil, I opted for an above ground leech
field. It the size of a very large putting green. Soil depth is too
deep
to have any concern of grass rootage affecting the leech piping. But, at
the same time, enough water is drained to keep the grass from drying out
in
drought periods...

And I'll bet it's REALLY green! :-)

You got that absolutely right. A genuine "green" green.

On the more serious side, I have to flush it with water to have the effect I
want to keep things going green in low rain times. I generally take a bath,
flush the toilet a few times consecutively, run the dishwasher, and run the
washer closely together on those days.

I generally use Xtra or Trend (both cheap) liquid washing detergents. I DO
NOT use any liquid bleach that goes to the septic tank. I use liquid bleach
and water in a 5 gallon plastic bucket to bleach whites. Pour the liquid on
the gravel driveway, rinse the clothing, pour the rinse water in same
location, then wash clothing. The wastewater in the gravel driveway has
neutral effect on foliage that likes to grow there. Generally soak whites
for 24 hours or more in bleach/water, less bleach needed. Have not used any
bacteria additives to date for the septic tank. For novices, the common way
to "start" a septic tank is with yeast from the grocery store. After that,
just maintain it with adequate waste and water.

What are you contemplating windmills for? To pump water
from your well?

electricty generation. i'm on a ridge & there is always some
breeze. i don't expect to make money, but if i can offset the
US$300+/month in electric bills a little, i'd be happy.

just a word to the wise - we have a small wind turbine & it's been slightly
disappointing - however, i would point out that it doesn't go constantly,
either (not enough wind). interestingly, we don't always have "enough" sun
but the solar panels are far more reliable! you might need to consider two
or three small turbines (with centralised batteries, more efficient).

many wind-nerds are also of the opinion that the barrel kind (cylinders set
up & down, if that makes sense) are going to be a better bet. if you get
these, i'd love to hear how they go!

our next turbine is going to be a handmade one, much much bigger & will be
taller when erected. yet with bigness comes the problem of getting it
started. nothing is perfect :-)

if you have reasonable amounts of sun, i'd consider solar technology
instead - it's moving ahead in leaps & bounds & as i said, seems to be more
reliable for a small, home situation. grid-connected people with a good
system can profit from their system very quickly - home windmills aren't
likely to be profitable though (i know you said you're not motivated thusly,
but people report a thrill from the meter going backwards). a mix of the two
covers a variety of weather situations though, which is worth noting.

our pet power nerd is trying to talk us into letting him design a hydro
system. i am sceptical.

and water in a 5 gallon plastic bucket to bleach whites.

I remember having a septic tank both in the house in Colorado and in
Georgetown when we were renting. The grass over the leach lines was
always very green, and we had to be OH so careful what we put down the
drains.

The tank flora products were only used if we had to have the tank pumped
for whatever reason.

Sorry about that! It's never ceased to amuse me that anyone that uses a

It's given me a lot of entertainment.

This one would easily fit one. This one, unfortunately, is made locally
by some gals that attend the Saxet gun show in Austin and other areas of
Texas. They run (when I bought mine a few months ago) $40.00.
The come in black with colored fronts in Forest green, kelly green and
royal blue. I think they may also come in navy blue but I don't remember
for sure.

Most good fannypack holsters will easily accommodate a wheel gun. You
can also try the Bianchi website, or I can provide you with the phone
number of the ladies that made mine.

I was hoping to get some advice regarding the use of grey water from

I’m not at all asking about the legality of it, which is not at all an
issue. Rather I am trying to find out whether or not the grey laundry
water is likely to stuff up my lawns. I use different sorts of washing
powders, switching between different brands, but I typically add:

NapiSan OxyAction MAX

http://www.vanishstains.com.au/whats_new.shtml#1

Is this sort of grey water ok for lawn watering?
What if this grey water was used for deep soil irrigation near plants
and shrubs? (This is much less of an issue at this stage).
I really would appreciate some advice. Thanks.

Here's a few links which may bear some light on this question.

Reuse of Greywater on Gardens

26 October 2007 8:56 PM
In these times of water restrictions in many Australian cities, it's tempting to consider using water from washing machines to irrigate lawns and gardens. The question is - is it safe to do so?

The answer is... it depends - on the type of detergent used in the washing machine, the soils in your garden and the area available to distribute the water. The fact is that applying laundry water indiscriminately can seriously damage plants and soil structure.

And it's not necessarily the amount of phosphorus in the laundry waste that is potentially harmful. More often than not it's the sodium content that determines how much laundry wastewater can be safely applied to a given area.

Much of the available information about applying greywater to gardens comes from the work of Dr Robert A. Patterson who is the Director of Lanfax Laboratories based in Armadale, NSW. Dr Patterson is regarded as an expert on the interactions between recycled water (including grey water from laundries) and soils.

The Lanfax Laboratories' web site has a lot of useful information that can help you plan how best to distribute grey water on lawns and gardens. The site itself is a bit confusing to navigate but the following two sections should provide most of the information you need.

* Laundry Products Research
* Reuse of Greywater on Gardens

One significant finding of Patterson's research is that "the simple assessment of the liquids (detergents) when compared with the powders is that liquids present less of a sodium hazard than the powders”.

The other (perhaps) surprising finding is that "... there are very few essential plant nutrients in greywater and a lot of nasty sodium. Most of the benefit you see from using greywater is from the water, not what is in it.......so greywater is not a fertiliser and never will be!"

I was talking to someone who is a local compost expert and they reckon
that puting grey water on the compost heap gets rid of the salts.

The only proviso to this is that this person has very large hot
compost heaps and actively goes out to find material to compost (for
example clears up all the leaves in the railway carpark)
